Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study were to examine the relations between social support, hope, and self care among patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Method: The study utilized the cross-sectional descriptive correlational design using the survey methods. The data were collected in May 2010 using self-reported structured questionnaires. The subjects for this study were 56 patients in Chungcheongnam-do and Jeollanam-do Province in Korea. The instruments were the PRQ-15, MHS and Self-as-Carer Inventory. The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS program.

Results: Social support was positively related to hope(r=.629, p<.001) and self care(r=.617, p<.001). Hope was positively related to self care(r=.678, p<.001).

Conclusion: The findings of this study provide useful information for understanding hemodialysis patients. These results suggest that the primary care givers and healthcare professionals should make an effort to improve social support and hope.
